Position Summary

This is a full-time term position for the remainder of the 2020/2021 school year ending in June 2021.  Working under the direction of and reporting to the Operations and Maintenance Manager the Custodian maintains a clean and tidy, and safe environment for all PRFN staff and students at the Dene Tsaa School.  The primary objective of this role is to perform custodial duties, minor maintenance, security checks, and other related duties at the school.


Primary/Core Responsibilities

  • Cleans offices, classrooms, the library, public areas, and recreational areas
  • Continuously sanitizes all high traffic and touch surfaces
  • Collects and takes out the garbage
  • Identifies emergent situations and reports to the Operations and Maintenance Manager
  • Sets up and takes down tables, chairs and additional equipment as required
  • Maintains an adequate supply of cleaning materials
  • Ensures supply storage areas are secure, including having cleaning supplies and materials stored in a safe and orderly manner
  • Follows guidelines relating to health and safety and reportable incidents
  • Maintains PRFN’s premises clean and organized
  • Monitors for the safety of the children at all times if working on school property
  • Monitors the environment daily for potential hazards, takes preventative action as required



Training, Education and Experience

  • Minimum completion of Grade 10 with Grade 12 preferred
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
  • WHIMS Certificate required.  Training can be provided
  • First Aid Level 1/CPR Certification


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of standard cleaning procedures, chemicals, products, and equipment
  • Knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
  • Ability to read and understand labels and instructions particularly on the use, application, and storage of cleaning chemicals and products
  • Ability to follow all sanitation procedures
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team, and gets along well with others
  • Ability to multi-task and work well in a busy environment
  • Effective verbal and listening communication skills
  • Good physical condition and stamina with the ability to lift and carry 40 lbs. safely and without assistance
  • Strong time management skills
  • Ability to create and follow effective daily routines, allowing for emerging needs
  • Friendly, positive, responsive, respectful, and helpful
  • Dependable and reliable, and flexible
