Position Summary
Working under the direction of and reporting to the Principal/Head Teacher the Cook prepares healthy meals and snacks for Students and Staff at the Dene Tsaa School as well as healthy meals for the Elders of PRFN, maintains a clean and tidy kitchen at the school, as well as ensures a safe environment for students.  The Cook is the primary person responsible for the preparation of food and the maintenance and cleanliness of the kitchen.  As such, this position plays a key role in creating a safe, healthy and welcoming atmosphere for students, staff, and elders.

 

Primary/Core Responsibilities

Kitchen Activities

  • Prepares a daily hot breakfast and hot lunch for students, school staff, and Elders, and two (2) snacks for students and staff that are healthy based on the Canada Food Guide, within budget, and based on the approved monthly meal plans
  • Prepares food in a safe manner in accordance with generally accepted safe food handling and preparation practices
  • Ensures safety of children with food allergies by avoiding cross-contamination of food and providing alternatives
  • Ensures kitchen is set up with all needed ingredients and cooking equipment
  • Maintains and promotes a clean, sanitized, safe and healthy school environment at all times, including cleaning and disinfecting all kitchen surfaces and equipment such as stoves, ovens and cs
  • Ensures spot cleaning and disinfecting are done as required
  • Monitor, cleans, sanitizes and restocks kitchen on a daily basis
  • Ensures all food and other items are stored properly
  • Ensures that kitchen cleaning equipment is properly maintained, securely stored, and in safe, proper working condition
  • Ensures that the end of each workday the kitchen is cleaned and prepared for the next day, including washing pots, pans, dishes and other kitchen equipment
  • Ensures security of all kitchen areas including locking doors and windows
  • Completes tasks in a safe manner, preventing injury and taking appropriate precautions regarding student safety
  • Develops, organizes, prepares, and presents a variety of healthy, and where feasible culturally appropriate meals that expose students to Prophet River’s culture and traditional foods
  • Completes other duties as assigned within the same scope and job level

Health and Safety

  • Follows guidelines relating to health and safety and reportable incidents
  • Keeps up to date on all guidelines relating to health and safety in a kitchen environment
  • Maintains a clean and organized kitchen
  • Monitors for the safety of the children at all times while on school property
  • Ensures a high standard of hygiene is maintained in the food preparation area(s)
  • Monitors the environment daily for potential hazards, takes preventative action as required, and reports all concerns to the Principal/Head Teacher

 

Qualifications

Training, Education and Experience

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Minimum one (1) year cook or chef experience in a large-quantity cooking environment
  • Minimum one (1) year experience working with school aged children K-12
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Food Safe Level 1 Certification
  • WHIMS Certificate
  • First Aid Level 1/CPR Certification
  • Emergency Child Care First Aid
  • Required immunizations are current and up to date

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience in using cutting tools, cookware and bakeware
  • Knowledge of various cooking procedures and methods (grilling, baking, boiling, etc.)
  • Ability to follow all sanitation procedures
  • Ability to work as a collaborative team and get along well with others
  • Ability to multi-task and work well in a busy environment
  • Proficient in the use and care of all kitchen equipment
  • Good physical condition and stamina with the ability to lift and carry 40 lbs. safely and without assistance
  • Demonstrated ability to listen well and communicate effectively both orally and in writing with discretion, tact, courtesy, and professionalism
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and engage with children; ability to quickly build rapport and trust
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills
